The role

This is a hands-on design role at a company that builds its products in house. You would work across the whole board: schematic capture, part selection, layout, bring-up and the test that proves it meets spec. The platform is STM32 across several product lines, so you build real depth in one family rather than touching twenty.

It suits someone a few years in who has done some design work and wants to own boards end to end, with a senior engineer alongside them to review the first few.

What you would be doing

  • Schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout for STM32-based control boards
  • Choosing parts against cost, availability and lifetime, not just the datasheet
  • Mixed-signal front ends: sensor conditioning, ADC, power supply design
  • Board bring-up and fault finding on the bench
  • Writing test procedures and supporting production with them
  • Pre-compliance EMC work and the fixes that come out of it

What the client needs

  • A degree in electronic engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout on real products, in Altium, KiCad or OrCAD
  • Familiarity with STM32 or a comparable 32-bit microcontroller family
  • Analogue fundamentals: you can read a sensor datasheet and design the front end
  • Comfortable with a scope, a bench supply and a soldering iron

Useful, not essential

  • Altium specifically, which is what the team uses
  • Pre-compliance or full EMC test experience
  • Enough embedded C to write test firmware for your own boards
  • Design for manufacture, and having had a board quoted and built at volume

What is on offer

  • £40,000
  • Hybrid, three days on site in Birmingham
  • Permanent, full time
  • Your own bench and lab access
  • Support toward chartership if you want it

Who it suits

This is a mid-level salary for a mid-level role. If you are a senior design engineer the money will not stretch, and we would rather tell you now than waste your afternoon. If you are early career with one or two boards behind you, this is a good next step.

How to apply

Use the form below, or email [email protected] quoting SEM-2602, or call 07359 446772. Your CV is not sent to the client, or anyone else, until you have heard who they are and said yes.
